In early 2023, Halifax High School student, Abigail Fetterhoff, proposed an idea to the school staff: a community garden. From that seed of an idea, and with the help of many, the Halifax Community Garden (HCG) was sown.
The HCG is proud to serve the residents of Halifax and surrounding communities by providing public garden plots at minimal cost. This project aims to improve the quality of life for our residents by giving them the skills they need to provide for themselves in times of economic uncertainty and helps to improve the community’s overall resiliency.
The HCG will also have an impact school-wide including:
Promoting sustainable gardening opportunities that are accessible to all the students on campus and school district and its partners.
Beautifying what was an unused space that will become open to all.
Providing learning opportunities for projects, demonstrations, installations and collaborations.
Increasing opportunities for engagement between internal and external communities.
Five Benefits of the Community Garden
1. More Learning Experiences
2. Fresh Produce For Everyone
3. It Teaches Real-Life Skills
The HCG will provide numerous learning opportunities for students and community members alike with chances to investigate sustainable growing initiatives.
The students of HASD and community members can contribute grown produce to a community stand where anyone can partake in the benefits of the garden.
With the inclusion of a garden manager internship position students can obtain real life managing skills and utilize problem solving skills.
4. Offers a Change of Scenery
5. Beautifies Unused Space
A major goal of the HCG is having an outdoor learning space for students to get some fresh air during the day. We plan on obtaining or building tables and chairs for this space.
By using space that was originally not used, we’re helping the HAHS campus create a beautiful garden space that could be a place of picturesque opportunity.
